It is said that if social media was a country, it would have been even bigger than China. It is one of the popular apps among advertisers too who want to target people according to their interests.

As fb can now be accessed via smartphones, laptops and tablets, many people registered themselves on this social media channel. Gradually, it became one of the most famous social networks for connecting with friends, family and people who have similar interests as you. The countries that have easier access to internet or those with a high population have a higher number of Facebook users.

India

Yes, it is surprising that in the past, The United States was on the top but now India has taken its place with 241 million active Facebook users. Over the past 6 months, the number of active Facebook users in the country increased by 27 percent as compared to the US, which only experienced 12 percent increase in the number of users over the course of 6 months.

United States

The USA is second on the list with 240 million users. Although India has taken the lead but the social media penetration here is low. Only 19 percent of the Indian population uses fb as per the statistics of June 2017 whereas, the social media penetration in the United States is higher. It’s 73 percent of the population of the country.

Three-quarter of the Facebook users in India are male while 54 percent of the fb users in the United States are women. Half of the active Facebook users in India are below 25 years.

Brazil

Yes, the number of Facebook users in this South American country is also rising. 79 percent of the internet users in Brazil use social media. As of 2017, there are 139 million fb users in Brazil. The average time spent by the people in Brazil on Facebook has increased by 208 percent. In the coming days, Brazil has the potential of becoming one of the leading countries to use social media.

Facebook has been a popular social media platform in the Arab countries apart from the ones that made the top 10 list. As of January 2017, there were total 156 million users from Arab countries.  These fb accounts come from Egypt, Algeria, Saudi Arabia, UAE, and Morocco, Syria, Iraq and Algeria. Egypt has 25 million active accounts i.e. 23 percent of the Facebook users belong to Egypt.  Then comes Saudi Arabia with 18 million users, Algeria with 16 million users, Iraq with 14 million users and Morocco with 13 million users.

The Arab countries are not the only ones experiencing growth in the number of Facebook users. Africa has made the list too. The country now has 170 million fb users and 94 percent of these users use their mobile devices for accessing social media. 42 percent increase has been experienced in the users since Facebook moved its headquarters to the larger offices in Johannesburg, Africa. Facebook opened its very first office in the country in 2015 after which the growth in the number of active fb users was recorded. Those who haven’t used Facebook to the fullest are coming to this platform and unleashing now possibilities not just for their business but for connecting with the people around the world.

Why isn’t China on the list?

For those of you who are wondering why China isn’t on the list, it’s because of the Urumqi riots in 2009. Fb caused wrath in the country when it was found that some independence activities from Xinjiang were using Facebook as a major source of communication. Now, the people of China use a social network ‘Renren; which complies with government regulations for filtering content. Hong Kong and Macau are the only places where Facebook is not blocked.

  • Japan

It is not just China where Facebook is not used much, there are two more countries where isn’t famous. The first one is Japan. Japanese use fb the way Americans use LinkedIn. Only 39 percent people in Japan use Facebook. Twitter, on the other hand, is more popular in the country. That’s because it fits the Japanese cultures and values most. Japanese like to keep their personal and professional lives separate so this affects the way they use social media.

  • Russia

It is the second in list of least Facebook Users is Russia.  The no.1 social media site faces really strong competition from a domestic player VK in Russia but it has still managed to attract 67 percent users. Due to the political environment in Russia, Facebook has censored certain content on its website in the country.

Even though Facebook is gaining popularity, it still hasn’t been able to please everyone.  For a company to expand its presence throughout the world, it is important to have a wide range of services in its portfolio and the social media site is going to have to follow the same rule.

A positive thing is that Facebook is continuously investing in different verticals and most of it is attracting the audience. As the usage of internet is growing day by day, it is plain to see that the number of fb users will multiply.
